How To Reverse Postpartum Hair Loss & Thinning - Naturally
*Disclaimer: this is not a sponsored blog post and as always, all of the opinions expressed are 100% honest and mine.
If there’s nothing else you can look forward to when you’re expecting a child, it’s the unsolicited advice about ev-er-y-thing! Even while pregnant with my second child, and after telling people that it wasn’t my first rodeo, people still volunteered their advice. This advice was anything from my exercise habits while pregnant, what to do during childbirth, and what to do after birth. Some of the advice was useful and other was just down right pointless. As an African-American woman I even received unsolicited advice on whether or not I should perm my hair, let another pregnant woman do my hair, or how long I should wait after deivery before I get my hair done again. Like, seriously. I’m not kidding. The absolute one thing that no-one EVER bothered to prepare me for while I was expecting with either child was the AWFUL postpartum hair loss and/or thinning.
The crazy part is I don’t remember visually seeing the hair come out when I brushed or combed through my hair. And during those times in my life I was an avid salon girl. Whether wearing my hair in it’s natural state, relaxed, or in a protective style, I was in the salon on a regular. MY stylist didn’t see it coming either. It was just like one day I woke up and BOOM – two very ugly bald spots around my edges near my temples. I was so distraught! I’ve always had very thick, coarse hair, and have never dealt with any shedding or balding. After my first child it was just a little thinning in those areas. But after the second… the hair was gone. Like, ALL GONE! It’s apparently a pretty normal occurrence for this to happen and no one says anything about it until it happens.
I’m not going into the scientific reasons why this happens because I’m sure that varies from person to person based on any number of variances, like hormones for example. However, I will say that I tried several home remedies and products on the beauty supply shelves but nothing seems to help. I am just now 18 months postpartum and still dealing with some of the effects of the hair loss and thinning (regrowth).
Thankfully I had a friend who introduced me to a line of products not sold in stores called Monat. Their Hydration System along with the Power Boost line have been everything to not only my postpartum hair loss, but also the overall health and hydration of the rest of my hair and scalp. Since it worked so well for me, I’m sharing the process that helped thicken my hair and make those bald spots almost non-existent. The Hydration System includes 3 products and is very easy to use. My hair was immediately more hydrated and felt stronger than it had in a very long time. The System includes a Renew Shampoo, Replenish Masque, and Revitalize Leave-in Conditioner. I also interchange my masque for the Deep Smoothing Conditioner depending on when I last used the masque. The shampoo is a hydrating cleanser that penetrates and moisturizes the scalp while getting rid of product build up. The Renew shampoo also helps boost natural hair growth and improves follicle strength to aid in reducing hair thinning with its blend of plant-based ingredients. I typically shower in the mornings after my workouts and that’s usually when #WashDay happens for me. There’s nothing like starting your day with clean hair (and that’s typically when my children are still asleep and I have uninterrupted styling time haha!). After Shampooing I follow with the Replenish Masque (every 4 washes) or my Deep Smoothing Conditioner when I don’t use the masque.
The Replenish Masque is a repairing and hydrating masque ideal for damaged and moisture-starved hair that penetrates and nourishes the scalp while boosting natural hair growth, improving follicle strength, and reducing hair thinning. The Masque is a once every 3-4 washes type of treatment and works best for me when I let it sit on for at least 5 minutes. If I have some extra time during my wash sessions I’ll even throw on a heat cap and let the condish stay on for about 30 minutes. That always makes my hair so soft afterwards and for a masque, this stuff has REALLY good slip!
If it’s not a “masque wash” I massage in and work my Deep Smoothing conditioner through to the ends of my hair and let it sit on while I finish all of my other shower essentials, then rinse out before jumping out of the shower. I like this conditioner because it’s infused with oils, light enough for people who wash a lot, and really helps with controlling frizz (a curly girl’s everyday struggle) and adding shine.
The last step before styling is my favorite – Restore Leave-in Conditioner. The leave-in is designed to revive each strand and uses the same clinically proven ingredients and technologies as the shampoo and masque. I like to keep my hair fairly damp for styling if I’m wearing my hair in its curly/coiled state so I lightly towel dry (with a t-shirt or microfiber towel – not cotton) and put a few pumps of the leave-in in the palms of my hands and rung through my hair with my hands. I also massage into my scalp some to help with promoting circulation. Then I style which is another post for another day.
Those were the steps I used for 3 months consistently before I decided to incorporate the Power Boost (Intense Repair Spray and S3 Hair Supplement). Because the company does such a great job of formulating ALL of the products to help with growth and the reduction of thinning and loss finding the right system for your hair is really the key. My hair needed moisture desperately because it never stayed hydrated to my liking in its curly state. But I have several friends that use other systems from the company and have seen significant growth as well, which is a plus.
There was a time before finding these products that I thought I’d just have to deal with the hair loss and would have to constantly look for ways to hide it. My hair is the healthiest it’s ever been and is definitely thicker and stronger than it was before my last child. As much as I’d love to say appearance doesn’t matter much to me, having two nice size bald spots right at the front of my hairline was taking a toll on my confidence. As women we all deserve to feel our absolute best especially with an accessory like our natural hair that we can never take off. Monat is definitely helping with that. I certainly want my children to always be confortable in the skin they’re in and I want to set that example and be proud of my own.
Now to sum this dissertation up, if you’re expecting a child or thinking about conceiving, don’t be alarmed if you have some hair loss or thinning. It happens to the best of us and there is hope and amazing products to help with it. If you’ve already had children and are still suffering or have suffered with loss or thinning from stress or other reasons, know that these products do not discriminate and may be the solution you’ve been looking for. The systems are simple to use and don’t deviate much from your current hair regimens. Just replace what you're currently using with these premium products, stay consistent with your healthy hair habits and enjoy the benefits! Much love babes – XO Carla
